GS1 Digital Link

glossary gs1 digital link featured

GS1 Digital Link is a GS1 standard for writing product identifiers, such as a GTIN, inside an ordinary web address. A QR code that carries that address can be read by a checkout scanner for the product’s identity and by a phone for online information. GS1 describes it as “enabling consistent representation of GS1 identification keys within web addresses.”

How a GS1 Digital Link Works

A GS1 Digital Link is a URL whose path is built from GS1 identifiers. Each identifier is a two-to-four digit Application Identifier (AI) followed by its value. The product’s GTIN comes first, then optional qualifiers.

https://example.com/01/09520123456788/10/ABC1/21/12345?17=180426
Part Meaning
example.com Domain that receives the scan
/01/09520123456788 AI 01, the GTIN (always 14 digits)
/10/ABC1 AI 10, batch or lot (1 to 20 characters)
/21/12345 AI 21, serial number (1 to 20 characters)
?17=180426 AI 17, expiry date, as a data attribute in the query string

The URI Syntax standard sets three rules. Identifiers and qualifiers go in the path, in order. Data attributes such as expiry go in the query string. A GTIN shorter than 14 digits is padded with leading zeros, so a 12-digit UPC 036000291452 becomes 00036000291452. The current release is 1.7.0, listed by GS1 as ratified in August 2026.

GS1 Digital Link QR Code and 2D Barcodes

A GS1 Digital Link QR code is a QR code whose content is a GS1 Digital Link URL. It is one of the 2D barcodes GS1 supports for retail. The other is GS1 DataMatrix. This entry covers the QR route.

The reason it matters is Sunrise 2027. GS1 states the goal that by the end of 2027 all retail point-of-sale systems should be able to read and process a defined set of 2D barcodes alongside linear ones. GS1 US adds that U.P.C. barcodes will keep being accepted after 2027, and that items carry both during the transition. For a QR code, GS1 specifies the symbology identifier ]Q1 and Digital Link URI rules.

At a minimum, a point-of-sale system must extract the GTIN from the 2D code and use it as it uses a 1D barcode today.

Resolvers and Domains

The domain in the URL decides who answers the scan. GS1’s canonical form uses id.gs1.org, the reference domain. Any other domain also works, but the result is a non-canonical URI.

A resolver is the service that receives the request and redirects it to the right destination, such as a product page, a recall notice, or a how-to. GS1 publishes a separate resolver standard for this. A scanner should not assume a URL points to a resolver. The syntax standard says to check for /.well-known/gs1resolver.

Without a resolver, a GS1 Digital Link is only a long URL. Vendors that run a resolver on a brand’s own domain let the destination change without reprinting the pack. Loftware’s purchase of BL.INK is one example of that market moving; the BL.INK review covers what changed.

How Long the URL Gets: A Size Test

A reproducible test built each URL with Segno 1.6.6 and decoded it with zxing-cpp 3.1.1. Every code decoded to the exact URL. The GTIN is the example from GS1’s own syntax document.

URL content Characters QR version (level M) Module size at 2.5 cm
Canonical, GTIN only 36 3 0.86 mm
Brand domain, GTIN only 37 3 0.86 mm
Brand domain, GTIN + lot 45 4 0.76 mm
Brand domain, GTIN + lot + serial + expiry 64 5 0.68 mm
Brand domain, 20-character lot and serial + expiry 88 6 0.61 mm

Each added qualifier raises the QR code version and shrinks each module at a fixed print size. Item-level codes with lot and serial need more print space than a GTIN-only code.

Common GS1 Digital Link Mistakes

  • Unpadded GTIN. The path needs 14 digits. A 13-digit EAN must be padded.
  • Wrong check digit. In the test, changing one digit of a valid GTIN made the check digit fail. A code that scans can still carry an invalid GTIN.
  • Qualifiers out of order. A serial placed before a lot is not valid.
  • A marketing URL with no GTIN. A QR code that points to a campaign page scans fine on a phone, but a checkout system cannot extract a GTIN from it.
  • No fallback destination. If the resolver has no match, the shopper lands on an error page.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a GS1 Digital Link?

A GS1 Digital Link is a standard way to put a GS1 identifier, usually a GTIN, inside a web address. The same code can then identify a product at checkout and open product information on a phone. It is encoded in a 2D barcode, most often a QR code.

Is a GS1 Digital Link QR code different from a normal QR code?

Yes, in what it contains. A normal QR code can hold any URL. A GS1 Digital Link QR code holds a URL with a defined structure: a 14-digit GTIN in the path after /01/, with optional lot, serial, and expiry fields. That structure lets a point-of-sale system read the product identity.

What is Sunrise 2027?

Sunrise 2027 is GS1’s target for retail point-of-sale systems to read 2D barcodes in addition to linear ones by the end of 2027. It does not remove the U.P.C. Both are accepted during and after the transition.

Can a GS1 Digital Link QR code be tracked?

A scan sends a request to the URL’s domain, so a resolver or redirect layer on that domain can count it. Confirm with your GS1 solution provider that any added tracking parameters do not break resolution. To plan tracking by product and batch, see QR codes on packaging at linkutm.
