What QR stands for, and where it came from

QR stands for Quick Response. The format was invented in 1994 by Masahiro Hara at Denso Wave, a Toyota subsidiary, to track parts moving through car factories faster than a barcode allowed. A traditional barcode holds about twenty characters and can only be read horizontally; a QR code holds thousands and can be read from any angle. Denso Wave chose not to enforce its patent rights, which is why the format spread everywhere and why nobody charges you to generate one. It became mainstream for consumers around 2017, when iOS and Android built scanning into the default camera app and removed the last real barrier: needing a separate app.

How a QR code actually works

The pattern is a grid of black and white squares called modules, and each module is one bit of data. The three large squares in the corners are position markers that let the camera find the code and work out its orientation, which is why a QR code scans upside down and at an angle. A smaller square near the fourth corner handles alignment on curved or distorted surfaces. Around the edge runs the quiet zone, a blank margin the scanner needs to tell where the code ends. Inside, the data is stored alongside Reed–Solomon error correction, a mathematical redundancy that lets the code be reconstructed even when part of it is dirty, creased or covered by a logo. At the highest correction level, roughly thirty percent of the symbol can be missing and the code still resolves.

What you can put inside one

A QR code is a container, and the payload decides what the phone does on scan. A web address opens a page. A WIFI: string joins a network without anyone typing a password. A vCard offers to save a contact. A mailto or sms link opens a pre-filled message. A tel link opens the dialler. A vCalendar event offers to add a date to the calendar. Plain text simply displays, with no internet needed at all. Picking the right type is most of the work — the same poster performs completely differently depending on whether the code opens a page or starts a WhatsApp message.

Static and dynamic codes

A static code encodes the destination directly into the pattern. It is free, it never expires, it depends on no company staying in business, and it can never be changed. A dynamic code encodes a short link that redirects, so the destination can be edited after printing and every scan can be counted. Neither is better in the abstract. Static is right for a permanent destination and a small print run; dynamic is right when the print outlives the campaign, when the URL might move, or when you need to know whether any of it worked.

How to scan one

On any iPhone from iOS 11 onwards and effectively every modern Android phone, open the camera app and point it at the code. A notification or banner appears; tap it. No app is needed. If nothing happens, the usual causes are a code printed too small for the distance, poor contrast between the pattern and its background, glare on a glossy surface, or a missing quiet zone. Android users can also scan from Google Lens, and both platforms can read a code from a photograph already in the gallery, which is useful when the original was on a screen or a moving vehicle.

Are QR codes safe?

The code itself is inert — it is a printed string, not software. The risk is entirely in where it sends you, and it is a real one: criminals cover legitimate codes on parking meters and posters with stickers leading to fake payment pages, a practice now common enough to have a name, quishing. Sensible precautions: check the URL preview before tapping, be suspicious of any code asking for payment or login details, look for a sticker applied over the original, and never enter card details on a page you reached only by scanning something in the street. For businesses, the countermeasure is branding — a logo in the centre of your code and your name printed beside it makes a substituted sticker far more obvious.

What businesses actually use them for

The uses that stick share one property: the code removes a step nobody wanted to take. Restaurant menus, because reprinting laminated cards is expensive. Guest Wi-Fi, because reading a twenty-character password aloud is miserable. Google review requests on receipts, because typing a business name into a review form loses most people. Product manuals on packaging, because a box has no room for twelve languages. Business cards, because typing contact details from a card into a phone is a chore. Event check-in, payments, app downloads, and print campaign tracking follow the same logic — the code is worth it wherever the manual alternative is annoying enough that people simply do not bother.
