URL Shortener API

glossary url shortener api featured

A URL shortener API is a programming interface that lets software create, update, and track short links without using a dashboard. Your code sends a long URL to the API over HTTP, and the API returns a short link that redirects to it. Teams use it to generate short links automatically inside apps, CRMs, email tools, and reporting pipelines.

How a URL Shortener API Works

A URL shortener API works through authenticated HTTP requests that return JSON. The flow has four steps:

  1. Your application sends a POST request with the long URL in the request body.
  2. The API checks your API key or access token.
  3. The service stores the destination, generates a unique back-half, and returns the short link.
  4. When someone clicks the short link, the service records the click and redirects the visitor to the destination.

Bitly’s v4 API is a typical example. It accepts a POST to https://api-ssl.bitly.com/v4/shorten with a bearer token:

curl -X POST https://api-ssl.bitly.com/v4/shorten \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_ACCESS_TOKEN" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"long_url": "https://linkutm.com/pricing?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=oct-launch", "domain": "bit.ly"}'

The JSON response includes the new short link in a link field, along with id, long_url, and created_at. The redirect itself behaves the same as a short link created by hand in a URL shortener.

What a Link Shortener API Can Do

Most link shortener APIs go beyond a single shorten endpoint. Common capabilities include:

  • Create links: shorten one URL, or many in a batch, with an optional custom back-half.
  • Update links: change the destination of an existing short link without changing the short URL.
  • Read and list links: fetch one link or page through every link in an account.
  • Delete or archive links: retire links that should stop redirecting.
  • Click analytics: pull click counts by date, country, device, or referrer.
  • Custom domains: issue links on a branded domain instead of the provider’s default domain.
  • Webhooks: receive a notification when a link is created or clicked.

Full create, read, update, and delete support is often called CRUD. A short link API without update support forces you to create a new link every time a destination changes.

Common Uses of a URL Shortening API

A URL shortening API is most useful when links are created at volume or by a system rather than a person.

  • Transactional SMS: order and delivery texts include a fresh short link per customer to save characters.
  • Email automation: marketing platforms shorten and tag every link in a campaign before sending.
  • Product sharing: apps create a short link when a user taps “share” on a listing or profile.
  • QR code generation: print workflows create a short link first, then encode it in a QR code so the destination stays editable.
  • Reporting: BI pipelines pull click data nightly and join it with GA4 or CRM data.

How to Choose a URL Shortener API

Choose a URL shortener API based on limits, ownership, and data access, not only price. Check these points before you build on one:

  • Quotas and rate limits: Bitly returns a 429 MONTHLY_LIMIT_EXCEEDED error once an account passes its monthly allowance. Know your ceiling before a campaign launch.
  • Authentication: look for scoped tokens you can revoke per integration.
  • Custom domains: links on your own domain can move with you. If you switch providers, you repoint the domain and import the links instead of losing them.
  • Analytics access: confirm click events are available through the API, not only in the dashboard.
  • Provider longevity: Google closed new goo.gl link creation in 2019 and deactivated inactive goo.gl links on 25 August 2025. Links tied to a shut-down service break.

linkutm includes API access on every plan, including Free, with full link CRUD and click events, plus an MCP server for creating links from AI apps. Compare limits on the linkutm pricing page.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a URL shortener API?

A URL shortener API is an interface that lets code create and manage short links through HTTP requests. You send a long URL and receive a short one in the JSON response. Most APIs also let you edit destinations, delete links, and read click analytics. It replaces manual copy-and-paste in a web dashboard.

Is there a free URL shortener API?

Yes, several providers offer a free URL shortener API tier. linkutm, for example, includes API access on its Free plan, capped at 25 links and 1,000 clicks per month. Free tiers suit testing and low-volume apps. Check the cap before you put a free key into production traffic.

How do I shorten a URL with an API?

Send an authenticated POST request with the long URL in a JSON body to the provider’s shorten endpoint. First create an API key or access token in your account settings. Then read the short link from the response, usually a field named link or short_url. Store the returned link ID if you plan to update or track the link later.

What is the difference between a URL shortener and a URL shortener API?

A URL shortener is the service that creates and redirects short links. A URL shortener API is the programmatic way to use that service. The links are identical either way. The API simply lets software create them in bulk or on demand, without a person in the dashboard.

Can I add UTM parameters to links created with a URL API?

Yes. Add the UTM parameters to the long URL before you send it to the API. The short link redirects to the full tagged URL, so GA4 still reads utm_source, utm_medium, and utm_campaign on arrival. Tag first, then shorten, so the parameters are never lost.
