Lead Source

Lead source is the channel or event that first brought a person into your sales pipeline, stored as a field on their CRM record. Common values include organic search, paid search, trade show, partner referral, and webinar. Sales and marketing teams use it to see which channels produce leads, pipeline, and revenue, not just website visits.
Why Lead Source Matters
Lead source connects marketing spend to revenue. Analytics tools report visits and form fills. Only the CRM follows a lead through to a closed deal, and lead source is the field that carries the channel along with it.
That makes three reports possible:
- Leads by source: which channels fill the top of the funnel.
- Conversion rate by source: which channels produce leads that become opportunities.
- Revenue by source: which channels produce customers, and at what cost per lead.
The third report often reverses the first. A paid social campaign can generate the most leads and the least revenue, while a partner program with a fraction of the volume closes at several times the rate. Without a reliable lead source value, budget follows lead volume instead of revenue.
Lead Source vs Traffic Source
A traffic source describes a website session. A lead source describes a person in your CRM.
| Lead source | Traffic source | |
|---|---|---|
| Lives in | CRM (Salesforce, HubSpot) | Web analytics (GA4) |
| Describes | A person or record | A single session |
| Changes | Usually set once | Every visit |
| Offline channels | Yes (trade show, phone, referral) | No |
| Typical value | Grouped channel, such as “Paid Search” | Source/medium, such as google / cpc |
One lead can have a dozen traffic sources over three months of visits: a LinkedIn ad, then organic search, then direct. The lead source records one of them, usually the first. The two also diverge for offline leads. A contact collected at a trade show booth has a lead source and no traffic source at all.
Original Lead Source vs Latest Lead Source
Original lead source is the first channel that created the record, and it should never change. Latest lead source (also called most recent source) updates each time the person converts again.
Each answers a different question. Original lead source credits the channel that generated demand, which is first-touch attribution applied at the record level. Latest source shows what brought a known lead back, such as a webinar invitation that triggered a demo request.
The most common data quality problem is losing the original value. A lead first arrives from organic search, returns months later through a paid ad, fills in another form, and the integration overwrites the field with “Paid Search”. Organic search loses the credit permanently. Protect the original field with a rule that only writes to it when it is empty.
Lead Source in Salesforce
In Salesforce, Lead Source is a standard picklist field on the Lead, Contact, and Opportunity objects. When a lead is converted, Salesforce copies its Lead Source value to the new contact and opportunity, so the channel stays attached to revenue reports.
Three details trip teams up:
- Default values are generic. The out-of-the-box picklist includes values such as “Web” and “Other”, which are too broad to guide budget decisions. Replace them with a controlled list that matches your channel groupings.
- The field is editable. Salesforce does not lock Lead Source. Any rep, import, or integration can overwrite it. Teams that need a permanent value create a custom Original Lead Source field and populate it only on creation.
- Web-to-Lead needs the field passed explicitly. A Web-to-Lead form sets Lead Source only if the form includes the
lead_sourcefield. Salesforce also caps Web-to-Lead at 500 leads per 24 hours.
HubSpot works differently. Its Original Source property is set automatically from the first tracked website visit, with two drill-down properties beneath it for detail such as the referring domain or campaign name.
How to Track Lead Source
Reliable lead source tracking combines automatic capture for digital channels with a manually set value for offline ones.
- Tag every campaign link with UTM parameters. The
utm_source,utm_medium, andutm_campaignvalues become the raw material for the lead source. - Persist the first-touch values. Store the UTMs in a first-party cookie or localStorage so they survive when the visitor browses three pages before converting.
- Capture them in hidden form fields. A script writes the stored values into hidden fields, which submit with the form and land on the CRM record.
- Map raw values to a lead source. A workflow translates
utm_medium=cpcinto “Paid Search” andutm_medium=emailinto “Email”. - Set offline sources at entry. Event imports, inbound calls, and referrals get a lead source when the record is created, not weeks later.
- Add a self-reported field. A “How did you hear about us?” question catches word of mouth, podcasts, and communities that no tracking script sees.
A captured lead then arrives with values like these:
https://linkutm.com/?utm_source=linkedin&utm_medium=paid-social&utm_campaign=q4-demo
Lead Source: Paid Social
Original Lead Source: Paid Social
The full click-to-CRM workflow, including the hidden field setup, is covered in UTM tracking for SaaS trial signups.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is lead source?
Lead source is a CRM field that records the channel or event that first brought a person into your sales pipeline. Typical values include organic search, paid social, email, trade show, and partner referral. Teams use it to report leads, pipeline, and revenue by channel.
What is the difference between lead source and traffic source?
Lead source belongs to a person in the CRM and is usually set once. Traffic source belongs to a single website session in analytics and changes with every visit. A lead can have many traffic sources but normally has one original lead source. Offline leads, such as trade show contacts, have a lead source but no traffic source.
What is original lead source?
Original lead source is the first channel that created a lead record. It is kept permanently, even when the lead converts again through a different channel. Storing it separately from a latest source field stops later conversions from overwriting the channel that actually generated the lead.
Can you change lead source in Salesforce?
Yes. Lead Source is a standard editable picklist, so users, imports, and integrations can all overwrite it. Admins who need a permanent record add a custom Original Lead Source field and lock it with a validation rule or flow. The picklist values themselves are edited in Setup, under Object Manager.
What are examples of lead sources?
Organic search, paid search, paid social, email, referral, partner, webinar, trade show, content download, and direct are the most common. Most teams keep 8 to 12 values so reports stay readable. Detail such as the campaign name belongs in separate fields, not in the lead source itself.
