Instagram Link Sticker

glossary instagram link sticker featured

An Instagram link sticker is a tappable sticker that adds a clickable web link to an Instagram Story. Viewers tap it to open the linked page in Instagram’s in-app browser. It is one of the few places on Instagram, besides the profile bio, where an organic post can carry a working link.

How the Instagram Link Sticker Works

Adding an Instagram Stories link takes about 30 seconds:

  1. Open the Story camera and capture or upload a photo or video.
  2. Tap the sticker icon in the top toolbar.
  3. Choose the Link sticker.
  4. Paste the URL and, optionally, tap Customize sticker text to replace the default label.
  5. Tap Done, then drag, resize, or rotate the sticker into place.
  6. Tap the sticker to cycle through its color styles, then share the Story.

A few rules shape how the sticker behaves:

  • One link sticker per Story frame. To share several links, post several frames.
  • 24-hour lifespan. The Story and its link disappear after a day unless the Story is saved to a Highlight, where the sticker stays tappable.
  • The domain is visible. The default label shows the destination domain, so viewers see where the link goes before tapping.
  • Other stickers still work. Polls, questions, and mentions can sit on the same frame as the link.

Link Sticker vs. Swipe-Up Links

The link sticker replaced the swipe-up link. Swipe-up was limited to verified accounts and accounts with at least 10,000 followers. Instagram retired it on August 30, 2021, and the link sticker launched with the same restriction.

On October 27, 2021, Instagram expanded link stickers to all accounts, regardless of follower count or verification. Instagram also said accounts that repeatedly share hate speech or misinformation would lose access.

Two other differences matter in practice. Viewers can reply to and react to a Story with a link sticker, which was not possible with swipe-up. And the sticker can sit anywhere on the frame, so it can be placed beside the content it refers to.

How to Track Instagram Link Sticker Clicks

Instagram reports taps, but it does not report what happens after the tap. Use two sources together.

Story insights. Business and creator accounts see a Link clicks count in each Story’s insights. Personal accounts do not get this metric. Record the count for each frame, since it covers only that frame.

Your analytics tool. Untagged clicks often reach Google Analytics 4 split across l.instagram.com / referral and instagram.com / referral, and some arrive as direct traffic. Adding UTM parameters to the sticker URL keeps every click attributed to the right Story:

https://example.com/fall-sale?utm_source=instagram&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=fall-sale&utm_content=story-nov-03

Use a different utm_content value for each Story frame so frames can be compared. Keep utm_medium out of GA4’s paid patterns (anything starting with “paid” or containing “cp”) for organic Stories. Otherwise the clicks land in Paid Social instead of Organic Social. A bio link uses the same tagging approach; see the bio link entry for how the two compare.

Expect a gap between the two numbers. Link clicks counts taps, while GA4 counts sessions that loaded the tag. Slow pages, closed browsers, and consent banners all widen the difference.

Instagram Link Sticker Best Practices

  • Replace the default label. A label like “Get 20% off” says why the viewer should tap. The bare domain does not.
  • Keep the sticker in the safe zone. Meta’s Stories guidance keeps key elements out of the top and bottom 14% of the frame (about 250 pixels on a 1080×1920 Story), where profile details and the reply bar sit.
  • Point to the sticker. An arrow, a “tap here” text box, or a short spoken prompt in a video tells viewers the sticker is there and what it opens.
  • Use a recognizable domain. Since the label can show the domain, a branded short domain builds more trust than a long, unfamiliar one.
  • Link to a mobile-ready page. The page opens in the in-app browser on a phone, so test it there before posting.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a link sticker on Instagram?

A link sticker is an Instagram sticker that turns a Story into a clickable link. You add it from the sticker tray, paste a URL, and place it on the frame. Viewers tap it to open the page without leaving Instagram. It replaced the older swipe-up feature in 2021.

Who can use the Instagram link sticker?

Every Instagram account can use the link sticker, including personal accounts with few followers. The 10,000-follower requirement ended on October 27, 2021. Only business and creator accounts see link click counts in Story insights. Accounts that break Instagram’s rules on harmful content can lose access.

Why can’t I see the link sticker on Instagram?

The most common cause is an outdated app, so update Instagram first. Check that you are in the Stories editor, not the feed post or Reels editor, since the link sticker is a Stories feature. If the sticker is still missing, the account may be restricted for guideline violations. Check Settings > Account Status to see whether any restrictions apply.

Can you add more than one link to an Instagram Story?

No. Each Story frame supports one link sticker. To share several links, post them on separate frames, one after another. For a permanent set of links, use the profile bio, which supports up to five links.

Do Instagram link stickers work in Highlights?

Yes. When a Story with a link sticker is saved to a Highlight, the sticker stays tappable after the 24-hour window ends. This makes Highlights useful for evergreen links such as a booking page or a product catalog. Update or remove the Highlight when the destination changes.
